Ashraf strikes 'home' chord with Manmohan Singh - Times of India

JAIPUR: In his meeting with Indian foreign minister Salman Khurshid here on Saturday, Pakistani PM Raja Pervez Ashraf reached out to his counterpart Manmohan Singh as he spoke about the peace message of Khwaja Garib Nawaz, the sufi saint whose Dargah is located at Ajmer. While thanking Singh for facilitating his first visit to Ajmer Sharif, Ashraf ``informally' ' told Khurshid how he was fond of the fact that he and Singh belonged to the same region in Pakistan. Both Singh and Ashraf come from the Potohar region of north-eastern Pakistan. While Singh's ancestral home is at Chakwal in Potohar, Ashraf belongs to nearby Gujarkhan. Interestingly, Pakistani Army chief Ashfaq Kayani and ISI DG Zaheer-ul-Islaam also come from the same region. Potohar is located in northern Punjab close to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Khurshid told Ashraf that he would convey his good wishes to PM Singh. While talking about Singh, Ashraf also spoke about how the fact both government and opposition in Pakistan had agreed to have a caretaker government in the run-up to the polls reflected the further maturing of democracy in his country. Khurshid congratulated Ashraf for heading what has been the first civilian government in Pakistan to have completed five years in power in the country. Pakistan's Parliament had passed a Constitutional amendment last year which allowed the formation of an interim government for conducting free and fair elections.
