MUMBAI: A builder, who is the son of a former Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) corporator, was shot at by his former employees at Manvelpada in Virar (E) early on Tuesday. While Kuldeep Chaudhary (27) escaped unhurt, his colleague sustained injuries. The suspects were later arrested on the basis of CCTV footage.

Kuldeep (27), a BVA activist and son of former corporator Kumudini Chaudhary, his friend Harishankar Dube and two others were returning home in a car after watching a Hindi film around 1.40am on Tuesday. At Mitbawadi in Virar (E), Kuldeep and Dube got out of the car and were chatting when two men on a bike fired three rounds at them from a country-made revolver. While two bullets missed Kuldeep and hit the car, the third hit Dube on his left leg. The men, who had covered their faces with handkerchiefs, fled.

The shooting was captured by a CCTV installed on the premises of a nearby building. Based on the CCTV foo tage, the victims identified the shooters as Mehul Chodankar (28) and Chandu Patil (27). They were picked up from their homes. The police also seized the revolver and the bike used in the crime.

"The bullets were fired by Chodankar, who was once Kuldeep's close friend and worked in his firm," said an investigating officer. "Chodankar and Patil are members of Hitendra Thakur-led BVA.

Dube is being treated at a hospital in Nalasopara and is out of danger.

In his police statement, Kuldeep said he had sacked Chodankar and Patil a few months ago as they had siphoned off over Rs 60 lakh. Chodankar then set up his own construction office in Virar. This reportedly angered Kuldeep who allegedly assaulted Chodankar on one occasion.
