NEW DELHI: Factional rumblings continue unabated in BJP with veteran leader L K Advani saying people were "somewhat disappointed" with the party, faulting the handling of the Karnataka situation in the wake of corruption charges leveled against former CM Y S Yeddyurappa. It is no secret that Advani had strongly resisted moves to prevent Yeddyurappa's exit from BJP by making him Karnataka state chief and his comments are seen as a fairly direct criticism of former party chief Nitin Gadkari and senior leaders who tried to work out a peace deal. In an interview with a weekly, Advani said he feels "distressed" that the BJP was not gaining as much as it sh ould in the public perception. "In the last few years, I have been feeling distressed to find that while the current mood of the people is against the present ruling party, they are simultaneously disillusioned with even the BJP," Advani said. Advani's tough attitude towards Yeddyurappa is seen to be influenced by his proximity to Karnataka leader Anant Kumar, a bitter rival of the former CM. The complicated internal equations in the BJP have seen Advani being frequently at odds with other leaders like Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. In fact, the current jockeying for the new team of office-bearers due to be announced by BJP chief Rajnath Singh has seen Advani oppose the candidature of some younger leaders seen to be close to Modi and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley. In his interview, Advani s aid BJP is "expected to have zero tolerance towards corruption" and added that "the manner in which we actually wrangled in Karnataka disappointed me". Advani did not explain his comments further he seems to be referring to the delay in removing Yeddyurappa after the corruption allegations. The Karnataka strongman quit as the CM after the Lokayukta criticized him and this finally led to his exit from BJP. Advani said he had "become very emotional" and "sad" at the public disillusionment with his party, but also asserted that he is "optimistic" about the future. via Top Stories - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNElZu0IgIna9lV6QMCdfZufzLrTZA&url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Distressed-by-BJPs-stagnation-Advani/articleshow/18885954.cms | |||
