Drug haul: Boxer Vijender Singh quizzed, refuses to give blood sample - Times of India

CHANDIGARH: Olympic medallist boxer Vijender Singh was questioned by the Punjab Police on Monday in connection with last week's recovery of 26kg of heroin worth Rs 130 crore. According to NDTV, Vijender refused to share a sample of his blood and hair for forensic examination with the police.

A Punjab Police officer told PTI that Vijender was quizzed by a two-member probe team of Fatehgarh Sahib police about the recovery of his SUV near the residence of prime accused Anoop Singh Kahlon, an NRI and alleged drug peddler.

He was also asked about the statement of his sparring partner Ram Singh that the duo had taken small quantities of the drug as "food supplement" and claims of Kahlon that he and the star boxer were in regular touch.

Though Punjab Police declined to make public the place where Vijender was questioned, the sources said this was done in Panchkula. The probe team comprised a DSP and an inspector.

The officer said that Vijender had been called for questioning through the Haryana police as the Olympian was working as a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) with the neighbouring state.

The names of Vijender Singh, India's Olympic bronze-medal winner and his roommate and sparring partner Ram Singh had emerged after the recovery of 26kg of heroin worth Rs.130 Ka hlon's residence in Zirakpur.

An SUV registered in the name of Vijender's wife Archana was found outside Kahlon's residence during the police raid.

Vijender has trashed allegations against him and asserted that he was neither involved in the illegal drug trade nor did he take drugs.

Ram Singh was questioned for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.

Police also interrogated Kulwant Singh on Monday, who is lodged in Tihar Jail in a drug haul case. He was brought to Fatehgarh Sahib on a production warrant till March 15.

Fatehgarh Sahib senior superintendent of police HS Mann said during investigation it emerged that Kulwant Singh was involved in packing of drug consignments.

He said that police was getting important details from Kulwant Singh about the drug trade in the region.

When asked about king pin of the gang Jagdish Singh Bhola, the SSP was the police was hopeful of arresting him soon.

Sources privy to the questioning of Vijender said that the boxer on being asked about his SUV reportedly said that he had given the keys of his vehicle to his boxer friend who had dropped him at the airport.

The sources said that Vijender was cooperating with the Punjab Police team.

Ram Singh during questioning told the police that he and Vijender had taken some substance, which later turned out to be heroin, as a "food supplement". They were not aware that it was heroin, Ram Singh claimed.

Ram Singh said Vijender and he had consumed 1-3 grams of heroin given to them by Kahlon, the key accused currently under arrest.

He said he had met Kahlon in the past but feigned ignorance about his criminal connections.

Vijender, 27, a former world number one, gave India its first Olympic medal in boxing when he clinched a bronze at t he 2008 Beijing Games. Besides, he is an Asian Games gold- medallist and a multiple-time Commonwealth Games medallist.

Considered the poster boy of Indian boxing, Vijender has stated that he does not know Kahlon.

An NRI of Canadian origin, Kahlon is allegedly known internationally in the drug cartel.
