AURANGABAD: Former chief minister Ashok Chavan said that there would not be a dearth of funds while dealing with the drought in the region. However, he said implementing all the schemes was a herculean task. "We should be able to reach out to the people at the grassroots level," Chavan said when he came to The Times of India office in the city on Sunday. Chavan said the state and central governments had announced various relief measures for the drought affected people in the Marathwada region. But the government will have to work quite hard to reach out to the remote villages, he said. "I f we cannot help the needy and affected masses and support them, there would be serious threat to law and order in the region. The situation may tempt the people to cross their limits in a bid to survive," he said. The former chief minister also said the situation in the region was more serious as compared to the drought in 1972. Nevertheless, he said the state government would meet the expectations of the masses. He appealed to all political parties to keep aside differences and unite to minimize the drought's impact. "At the time of the earthquake in Latur and Usmanabad, all political leaders and party men had come on a common platform and participated in the relief work. People had shed their differences and had united for the cause of humanity at that time. We need a similar approach from the people," he said. Chavan pointed out that the water scarcity situation had recently started showing its tentacles. "As the times passes, the gravity of the drought will be felt intensely. When I consider the time period for planning relief measures, I assume a July 15, 2013 deadline. That's because we will have to survive with limited water resources till then, he said, highlighting the need for properly planning the use of water when the summer is at its peak. via Top Stories - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNEyVAOqoMIbMo2N56tuoR3yaI0Rtw&url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/aurangabad/Enough-funds-to-tackle-drought-in-Marathwada-Ashok-Chavan/articleshow/18900283.cms | |||
