For the second time in a week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was in a combative mood, describing the opposition as "men of envy", even as he promised that growth would "bounce back" to 7-8 per cent in a couple of years. In Lok Sabha, a war of words in Urdu couplets had transpired. During his reply to the motion of thanks on the President's address in Rajya Sabha on Friday, Singh however turned to the Greek isles. Pointing fingers at Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley, the Prime Minister quoted first century AD Roman senator and historian Tacitus: "When men are full of envy they disparage everything, whether it be good or bad". Singh was referring to Jaitley's strong attack on the government for failing to fuel growth on Wednesday, when the latter had also used a quote from Tacitus. "I agree to Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley saying that country needs a growth of 7-8 per cent to get rid of poverty. I would like to remind this house that this is precisely the intention of the UPA government," he said. The Prime Minister said the Centre would continue to persuade state governments to evolve a consensus over the National Counter Terrorism Centre. "I believe, there are no two points of view that we should not make any compromise with terrorism. I, sincerely, hope and believe that when it comes to dealing with terrorism, all political parties will speak with one voice," said Singh. As far as the country's relations with Pakistan were concerned, Singh said that there cannot be normalisation of ties, until "the terror machine, which is still active in Pakistan, is brought under control". Singh also appealed to the BJP to support the constitutional amendment bill to endorse the Land Boundary agreement with Bangladesh: "This is an agreement which would ensure peace on the border, which would remove uncertainties." The house adopted the motion of thanks to the president's address. via Top Stories - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNEtXi4Lx6FIcx5kN-9RRteABT-N2w&url=http://newindianexpress.com/nation/article1493968.ece | |||
