Pope Francis branded Britain 'usurpers' over Falklands conflict - Telegraph.co.uk

During the service, 649 red roses were placed on the altar in tribute to Argentina's fallen.

Bergoglio added: "The country cannot exclude from its memory any of those who were called; it has to take care of so many hearts with scars and say thank you, to those who remained on the islands or submerged in water, all of them.

"The country should recognise their scars." His comments a year ago have resurfaced at a poignant time, just a day after the population of the Falkland Islands voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a UK Overseas Territory.

They indicate that, despite reports of frosty relations between the presidency and the Argentinean church, the new Pope is politically aligned with Cristina Kirchner, who has increasingly returned to the issue of the sovereignty of the islands in recent months.

Among those at the cathedral to hear his speech were former members of TOAS, or the South Atlantic Theatre of Operations, a naval unit controlled from Buenos Aires during the war.

In a statement on the anniversary, Catholic Action Argentina said: "It has not been a futile loss of the 649 soldiers killed and many others who returned home and carry the weight of suffering from that war in their minds. We have learned from this lesson the pain of war, everyone loses, no one wins."
