KANNUR /THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It took an anonymous letter for State Bank of Travancore officials to suspect that something was amiss about one of their employees. Biti Mohanty, the rapist who jumped parole in 2006 and was caught on Saturday in Kannur, was a probationary officer with the bank for the last nine months.

A less-than-fool proof vetting by the bank, and delay on the part of the police in completing its own verification reportedly helped Mohanty to join and work in a public bank for some months. He had joined SBT in June, 2012 as 'Raghav Rajan'.

"We have sent the details of 'Raghav R ajan' for police verification, but the report hasn't reached us yet," said SBT chief manager (public relations) Ranjith Thomas. Sources in SBT said police verification of recruits often gets delayed for one to two years. The incident has prompted bank authorities to review procedures regarding employment. "We will look into whether there was any lapse on our part that enabled him to get into the bank," said A N Krishnan, general manager-HR of SBT.

A wanted criminal he might be, but Mohanty is described as a pious young man by the staff at Chinmaya Institute of Technology at Govindagiri where he got an MBA degree.

"He was not just a brilliant student but very active in extracurricular activities too. At the same time, he was highly submissive," said K K Rajan, chief sevak (secretary) of Chintec. "He also used to recite bhajans beautifully and even our priest is now shocked over the developments."

Administrative officer P Rajeesh Lalu said all relevant documents in the name of 'Raghav Rajan' had been submitted when Biti joined the institute in 2009. "We went through all formalities under AICTE before admitting him and also the equivalency certificate was verified by Kannur University," Lalu said. He added Biti had given his address as C/o S V Rama Rao, A-7, GF Sai Sree Enclave, Chitravathi Road, Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. "From his behaviour and also the Puttaparthi address, we thought he was a pious young man, but now we don't know what to say," Rajan said.
