German tourist rape: missing Bitti Mohanty, arrested Bitty Mohanty, son of former Odisha DGP Bidya Bhushan Mohanty, who was sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for raping a German tourist in Alwar (Rajasthan) in 2006, has been arrested from Kannur in north Kerala on Friday night. He has been charged with cheating, impersonation and forgery and would be produced before a local court after completing the arrest proceedings before being handed over to Rajasthan police, Kannur SP Rahul R Nair said. Kerala home minister T Radhakrishnan said, "Yes, we got convincing evidence that he is a convict in the case... We are looking at the merits of the case. We will proceed against him. We are in the right path of investigation in the case". Ranjit Thomas, PRO, State Bank of Travancore where Bitti was working said, "I am sorry we are not able to identify as such, he was recruited in the bank last year through the process and on the basis of the anonymous letter, we had suspicion over the identity of the person so we handed over an official complaint to the DGP Thiruvananthapuram". He was working in the bank as a probationary officer under an alias and was was nabbed after it got an anonymous letter last week revealing his real identity. Absconding after jumping the 15-day parole, he took an MBA course in Kannur two years ago. He appeared for a banking recruitment service examination in Andhra Pradash and was appointed as a probationary officer last year. "Bitty took a new name Raghav Rajan and his records with the bank show he is a resident of Andhra Pradesh. A police team from Rajastan is reaching Kannur to take his custody," Kannur SP Nair told Hindustan Times. Bitty was charged with raping a German national on  March 21, 2006 and was convicted for seven years imprisonment the same year. His trial was completed in just 24 days, the fastest in a rape case in the country. However on Nov 20, 2006, he got 15 days' parole to meet his ailing mother in Cuttack. Since then he had been absconding and there were allegations that BB Mohanty helped his son to escape. BB Mohanty was suspended on the basis of the allegations but was reinstated later. After the brutal Delhi gangrape social media carried details of some of the notorious rape incidents of the country some of them posted details of Alwar rape and picture of absconding Bitty. "In the wake of Delhi gangrape ,his photo was among the pictures of accused in various sex crimes shown by social media and television channels repeatedly. This really helped someone in identifying him who alerted the bank," another senior police officer said. But how he could dodge the police for six years and take up an important assignment, that too in a public sector bank, has baffled the police.
