Saugata Roy quits as Didi's adviser - The New Indian Express

TMC MP Saugata Roy has purportedly resigned as Mamata Banerjee's adviser for industries and commerce. TMC sources say that Roy quit over differences with the party matriarch over the industrial policy.

When contacted Roy told Express, "I won't confirm or deny it. I have no comments to make right now".  However, other TMC leaders said that both Didi and Roy were unhappy with the goings-on.

Roy had been bestowed the arduous task of formulating the state's industrial policy, which was to be unveiled in January's business summit, Bengal Leads.

Roy had written to various industrial bodies, included their recommendations in the draft policy. However, the West Bengal CM was unhappy with the draft which clearly showed that the state's "hands-off" policy on land acquisition has caused an unavailability of land which was one of the biggest stumbling blocks in West Bengal's industrial dreams.

Roy had indicated that setting for of big industries would be problematic in the state due to the lack of available land. In fact at a seminar last week, Roy went a step further and said, "Availability of land is a problem in our state. Given the constraint, it is difficult to set up a large manufacturing industry here. Hence, the state should focus on MSMEs."

While Mamata took offence to the comments, Roy too may have been at the end of his tether. Roy apparently sent his resignation on Wednesday night, However, there has been no official word on whether it has been accepted by the TMC chief yet.

Roy had been appointed the adviser to the state Industry Ministry in October soon after the party withdrew support from the UPA-II and former Union ministers like him were left without a Cabinet brief.
