US lawmakers, businessmen come calling Narendra Modi - Times of India

GANDHINAGAR: Days after UK minister Hugo Swire met Narendra Modi, a 24-member delegation from the US called on the Gujarat chief minister on Thursday, indicating a softening of stance among a section of politicians in America.

According to agency reports, the team also invited Modi to America and said they will work with the US administration towards this end.

Modi showcased the Gujarat model of development before the delegation comprising businessmen and parliamentarians — the team includes members of the House of Representatives.

The US administration has refused to grant Modi a diplomatic visa since the 2002 riots. A major controversy had broken out earlier this month when the Wharton India Economic Forum had revoked its invitation to Modi for a keynote address through videoconferencing.

The latest delegation is led by Republican Congressman from Illinois Aaron Schock, who was investigated by the House Ethics Committee recently for allegedly violating federal law while raising funds for a fellow Republican. The other key members of the delegation are Republican Congresswomen Cynthia Lummis and Cathy M Rodgers.

Schock was in news after the recent Gujarat assembly polls for congratulating Modi on the floor of the US House of Representatives. It is not known whether the issue of the US granting a visa to Modi was discussed in the meeting.
