PMK cadres run riot in TN, Puducherry - Times of India

CHENNAI: A day after police arrested PMK founder S Ramadoss and several top-rung leaders, party cadres continued to unleash violence in several parts of the state, including the Vanniyar-dominated districts of Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri.

In many places, police seemed helpless in preventing the violence, as cadres set buses afire, damaged government vehicles, cut down trees and vandalised an MGR statue. The violence had started on Tuesday night.

Hundreds of riotous cadres in these districts, besides party men in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Cuddalore, were rounded up. PMK functionaries staged flash strikes, blocked roads and disrupted normal life to condemn the arrest of Ramadoss and demand his immediate release.

Salem range DIG Sanjay Kumar said those arrested were booked for unlawful assembly and for damaging public property. "Nearly 1,000 people were arrested for blocking roads," he said. "We arrested 16 people for setting fire to a government bus near Uthangarai."

In Puducherry, cadres damaged public property, including electric posts, and blocked the busy East Coast Road, disrupting traffic movement for more than two hours. Most shops and business establishments on the outskirts of Puducherry downed their shutters, fearing a mob attack.

On Tuesday the Villupuram police had arrested Ramadoss from the venue of a protest to demand a judicial inquiry into an April 25 caste flare-up.
