New Delhi: Nine years after a Mumbai girl Ishrat Jahan and three other youths were killed in cold blood by the Gujarat Police, the case has now come to haunt the country's premier intelligence agency - the Intelligence Bureau. And in the dock is the IB's Special Director Rajinder Kumar, who was posted in Gujarat in 2004 when the encounter took place. Kumar now faces a real danger of being charged by the CBI in the case.

Sources say that CBI investigations have revealed a gory tale of complicity between the Gujarat Police and the IB in eliminating Ishrat and three others.

Sources claim that Kumar not just provided intelligence input on Ishrat but was also actively involved in the encounter plan. The four victims were picked up by the IB and kept in illegal confinement for three days before the encounter. The sources add that a day before the encounter, Ishrat and the other three men were handed over to the Gujarat Police at Valsad toll plaza.

CBI sources also said that IB Special Director Rajinder Kumar had called the Gujarat CM\'s office 37 times on the day of the encounter.

CBI investigations also show that the AK-47 and other weapons recovered from Ishrat were provided by Kumar. Call records with the CBI reveal that Kumar called the Gujarat Chief Minister's office 37 times on the date of the encounter.

The above and other shocking revelations have reportedly been made by another accused police officer in the case, GL Singhal. His disclosure has helped the CBI nail Kumar and various other people. Meanwhile, the CBI has strengthened its case by recording Singhal's statement before a judicial officer, a statement which he cannot retract from.

This case has also become a subject of intense bickering between the CBI and the IB. However, the CBI director has said that the agency has "enough evidence" against Kumar. "The evidence that will stand against legal scrutiny. It is on the basis of this evidence that Kumar has been summoned," CBI chief Ranjit Sinha said.

But on the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party which is in power in the state, is crying foul over the case. It fears that the case may be made into a political tool to get to Gujarat CM Narendra Modi.
