LK Advani speaks of NDA plus formula again - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader LK Advani, who has been chanting the "NDA plus" mantra, did not miss the occasion to pay tribute to Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mookerjee to slip in his formula to defeat Congress. The BJP patriarch was going down memory lane recalling Mookerjee's contribution, when he made the reference to the need for a wider coalition to fight Congress, an argument he has been citing to oppose Narendra Modi's elevation. Advani has apparently not reconciled to the strategy of the party to project the Gujarat Chief Minister as the face of the party for the Lok Sabha election. He said Mukherjee had realized way back in 1952 that a coalition of forces was necessary to fight Congress monopoly in the country's political scenario and that his assessment was valid even today. "At the first Council of the Jan Sangh in Kanpur he had brought members of the Ganatantra Parishad Party members from Orissa to watch the proceedings. He had realized then that Congress hegemony was not good for the country. That to break it, we should be ready to join hands with other parties. This is significant even today," Advani said. In his letter to party chief Rajnath Singh when he resigned from party posts after the Goa conclave, Advani had said BJP was no longer the "same idealistic party" created by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyaya, Nanaji Deshmukh and Vajpayee. The BJP leader had apparently conveyed to party chief Rajnath Singh his "anguish" over the JD-U's split from the NDA following Modi's elevation in Goa. However, Advani's position did not have many takers in the BJP or the RSS.
