LK Advani is back to seeing bright prospects for BJP - Hindustan Times

After a long hiatus, and for the first time since Narendra Modi's projection as BJP's campaign face, senior BJP patriarch LK Advani has again begun to see "bright" prospects for his party in the 2014 general elections.

Addressing the national executive meeting of the BJP Scheduled Caste morcha, Advani said, "I can see from all angles that BJP will give record-breaking results during the 2014 elections."

Hitherto, the BJP patriarch has always held a bleak view of his party, saying that it had not been able to rise to the people's expectation though the Congress' popularity was dipping.

Also, the issue of  BJP formally declaring Modi as prime minister candidate still remains a ticklish issue though other BJP leaders are hoping to persuade Advani to make the announcement himself in the days to come.

Advani's latest positive affirmation for BJP comes after 48 days since Modi's projection, which saw an upheaval in BJP. Advani had then resigned from all posts and later withdrew it.

Later, he held wide-ranging discussions with the RSS brass in Nagpur, which indicated that the Sangh would not stand in the way of his playing a key role if the 2014 polls threw up an indecisive mandate. But he should first help the BJP win the polls with Modi at the helm.

Advani on Saturday seemed to indicate that his optimism was based on recent opinion poll surveys that pointed to the BJP's score of parliamentary seats going up from the 2009 tally while the Congress's figures coming down due to several anti-incumbency issues including price rise.

Two days ago, the CNN-IBN-CSDS-The Hindu Election Tracker survey showed that the 2014 Lok Sabha election was going to throw up a fractured mandate with neither BJP nor the Congress coming anywhere close to the half-way mark of 272 in the 545-member Lok Sabha.

Urging his party workers to be ready and begin preparations for the polls, Advani said, "It is not necessary that the election result would be the same as what the election tracker survey has been predicting. I am firm that the result will be much better than what has been predicted." He also praised the RSS for working towards ending caste discrimination.

"The Congress Party has set the agenda for the 2014 polls due to corruption and misgovernance. The BJP's job is just to highlight it," he said.

He also added, "Elections in the six states of the country and the Lok Sabha polls will take place before April, may be till May. But everybody is of the opinion that the Election Commission will itself want that the polls take place earlier whether the government wants it or not."
