MUMBAI: The Congress in Maharashtra was on defensive in the state assembly on Tuesday after opposition BJP targeted the state government over the forceful shut down of a restaurant by Congress activists. The restaurant in its cash memo had criticised the scams happening under the UPA government's tenure. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on this issue saying this was "height of intolerance" and posted a photo of the cash memo of the eatery. After Modi's tweet, the Maharashtra Congress claimed that party activists only held demonstrations outside the restaurant and did not force it to shut down. The BJP alleged that it was a case of high-handedness by some Congress leaders and workers who allegedly forced the restaurant, 'Aditi veg', to shut shop on Monday evening after it was discovered that the eatery's cash memo had a few lines printed at the bottom claiming that food was expensive because of the hikes in taxes and scams such as 2G and Coalgate. In its cash memo the restaurant blamed the government for a new tax on air-conditioned eateries. Some leaders belonging to the Youth wing of the Congress allegedly forced their way into the restaurant on Monday evening, protested and forced a shut down. The issue was raised in the state assembly by the BJP. "This is shocking. The ruling party does not want to give the people right to protest against their scams. Why is the Congress so intolerant", said Devendra Phadanvis, MLA and BJP's state president. Even though the restaurant reopened on Tuesday, the bill slamming the tax on AC restaurants by UPA was discontinued. The owner of the eatery, Srinivas Shetty, refused to comment on the issue but was reportedly unhappy at the service tax imposed on air-conditioned restaurants. The issue attracted major attention in the state assembly after it was discovered that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted about 'Congress's intolerance with regard to the eatery in Mumbai'. President of the state youth wing of the Congress party Vishwajeet Kadam said "We did not harm anybody and we did not damage the place. We peacefully protested outside the restaurant not just because of the comments on the cash memo but also because of some other issues about this restaurant that were brought to our notice". The Congress workers also filed a complaint against the restaurant owner with the local police. Copyright © 2013 Times Internet Limited.
