Ananya Bhardwaj : New Delhi, Mon Aug 19 2013, 02:22 hrs ![]() ![]() ![]() While children in the neighbourhood of Pilukhwa cheered at the tricks of a candy seller creating sparks from sugar dust, 10-year-old Abdul Karim alias Tunda used to stand in a corner, wondering. Being inquisitive, he would keep on thinking how a powder that tastes sweet can generate fire. He finally found his answers years later, when using the same candy seller's formula, he made his first live explosive. Tunda, according to the Delhi Police, has said as a kid he used to observe the local candy seller creating sparks using a white powder to attract customers. He later found that the powder used was potassium. "He revealed that the candy seller had some white powder, which he used to coat with sugar and then add a few drops of liquid to it. The moment he added that liquid, it used to generate fire. As a child everybody believed that he is a magician, but Tunda went a step ahead to research and find out the composition of those chemicals," a senior police official said. Tunda revealed that this impression of the candy seller was so firmly implanted in his mind that he could never forget it. Special Cell officials said when Tunda was 40 years old in the 1980's he witnessed the 1984 riots in Maharashtra. The riots that broke out on May 17, 1984 in industrial belt from Mumbai, Thane to Bhiwandi after a saffron flag was placed at the top of a mosque, left more than 270 people dead. Among these were Tunda's very close relatives. "He claimed that many of his family members died in the riots after which he decided to turn into a jihadi," said an official. "In 1985, he carried out his first experimental explosion by taking a pipe and adding all the basic ingredients (potassium powder and sugar) used to make a bomb. He then added a few drops of sulphuric acid to the mixture which immediately formed gasses and exploded. He gradually honed his skills to become Lashkar-e-Toiba's bomb expert." ... contd.
