Divers recovered a sixth body from the ill-fated Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sindhurakshak on Saturday afternoon. "The body has been taken to INHS Asvini and will later be sent to JJ Hospital," said Padmakar Juikar, ACP, Colaba division.

The  Navy collected blood samples of 30-40 family members of the dead sailors for DNA sampling. They were later taken to the incident site.

Around 20 naval divers continued their underwater efforts in the waters of the Mumbai naval dockyard in search for the bodies of their colleagues trapped inside  Sindhurakshak. The submarine sank following an explosion and fire on  Tuesday night. On Friday, five mangled bodies were pulled out by the divers.

The divers are working against heavy odds - the submarine has been reduced to a mass of mangled steel, only two of the three hatches have been opened since the forward one is proving to be particularly difficult. Murky waters continues to hamper the salvage operation. "Navy divers are carrying out the task of searching for bodies within the submarine by feeling each inch as there is zero visibility within flooded compartments. They are also marking a probable route to be used for further rescue operation," said a press statement issued by Ministry of Defence.

The divers enter the water, three at a time, to look for the bodies. An officer involved with the operation admitted that the forward escape hatch is still locked. Authorities suspect  that a majority of the bodies might be lodged between the forward portion and the conning tower of the submarine. The board of inquiry has commenced its p into the tragedy.

A senior officer said it was undecided if the vessel would be inducted back into active service.
"First we will have to completely salvage the submarine to check the kind of damage and destruction caused, only than we will be in a position to ascertain if it is worth spending on an overhaul," informed the officer. The chances of salvaging the vessel appear extremely slim.
Preliminary surveys have begun to ascertain the condition of the hull and the overall submarine.
