MANGALORE: With the sighting of moon late on Wednesday, the month-long fasting days of Ramzan came to and end in the coastal city. The city celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with pomp and gaiety on Thursday. Muslims came out in large numbers braving heavy rain in the morning to offer prayers and greet each other. The community celebrated Eid in true spirit and fervour by offering prayers and visiting houses of their loved ones. Special prayers were offered at various mosques in the city to mark the beginning of the festival in the morning. Community members from all sections of the society thronged their nearby masjids to offer prayers to almighty. Dakshina Kannada district qazi Twaqa Ahmed Musl iyar led the namaz and the prayer meet held at Idgah Juma Masjid on Light House Hill Road here. The cleric called upon the community to work for harmony in society. "Ramzan is a festival that heralds the message of peace, love and harmony. Muslim brethren should spread the message of peace in society," he said. Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid chairman Y Abdulla Kunhi said, "It is our duty to protect the diversity of the country. Celebrate Eid to preserve our culture and also to create harmony in society," he said and advised community members to celebrate the festival in a simple manner. Hundreds of devotees offered prayers at Kankanady Juma Masjid, Taqwa Masjid, Pumpwell, Kudroli Juma Masjid, Noor Masjid, Hampankatta, Katchi Masjid, Bunder, Bikkarnakatte Masjid and many other places in the city. Separate arrangements were made for women to offer namaz at Ibrahim Khaleel Masjid and a few other centres in the city.
