Subramanian Swamy unites with BJP - Hindustan Times

Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday merged his party with the BJP.

The announcement was made by Swamy and BJP chief Rajnath Singh at the latter's residence in New Delhi. Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari and senior party leader Arun Jaitley were also present.

"Swamy has been part of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He has decided to merge his Janata Party with the BJP. We welcome him to the BJP," Singh said.

Swamy said unity was required at this juncture: "The country is passing through a difficult time... for unity, for nationalistic purpose, the party is needed by the country today because of all the problems that we are having."

There were talks of this merger for quite some time, but some BJP leaders were skeptical of Swamy's propensity to be "shrill". However, many felt he would be an asset.

Swamy is known to have an understanding of legal issues and has been known to drag Congress leaders to court over "corruption". He is also known to use shrill language against the Nehru-Gandhi family and has also been accused of making "anti-Muslim" remarks.

He may not have a mass base but can be politically aggressive and hard-hitting.
