Hyderabad: Congress rebel and founder-president of the YSR Congress Party, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, resigned as member of Parliament (MP) on Saturday protesting the unilateral decision of the Congress party and its allies to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh and create a separate Telangana state. His mother Y.S. Vijayamma also resigned as a legislator of the state assembly .

They join 16 of their party legislators from the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema region—known together as Seemandhra—who quit office on 25 July, prior to the 30 July decision of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to carve out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad as the joint capital of the two Telugu-speaking states for a 10-year period.

The government's decision has sparked protests across the 13 districts of the Seemandhra region with the people pressurising their elected representatives to quit office and stall the formation of a new state. The demonstrations entered 11th day on Saturday.

Jagan Reddy and Vijayamma, also the party's honorary president, were the only two members of the party who hadn't quit office yet. YSR Congress Party, which did not spell its stand during the all-party meetings convened before 30 July, has, of late, indicated its inclination towards a unified state, owing to its stronger presence in the Seemandhra region.

The pro-united Andhra Pradesh stand sparked an internal rebellion within the YSR Congress Party with senior leaders from Telangana region quitting the party. They also questioned Jagan Reddy's political motives.

Jagan Reddy broke ranks with the Congress party after being sidelined by the central leadership, following the death of his father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash in September 2009. He is currently lodged in prison in a disproportionate assets case linking his growth in income to allegedly attracting quid pro quo investments into his companies during the tenure of his father as the chief minister of the state.

Six state cabinet ministers and 19 MPs from the Congress, Telugu Desam and YSR Congress Party, have resigned from office protesting the Congress party's decision to divide Andhra Pradesh. Following representations from its law makers in the state, the Congress party has appointed a four-member committee to examine the grievances of people from the Seemandhra region.
