Breaking his party's silence, BJP president Rajnath Singh said that his party backed section 377 of IPC despite widespread demand to decriminalise gay sex.
Endorsing the Supreme Court's verdict, Rajnath Singh in an interview to a newspaper said that the BJP supported section 377 as they believe that homosexuality is an unnatural act and cannot be supported.
Rajnath also added that, "The court does not have to legalise or illegalise such a thing. It is not against the order of nature."
The party president's remark is the first conclusive statement from the BJP that makes the legislative option difficult for the UPA to make gay sex legal. It is a widely debated and sensitive issue that has caught the eye of the political bigwigs of the country.
"We will state (at an all-party meeting if it is called) that we support Section 377 because we believe that homosexuality is an unnatural act and cannot be supported," Singh said.
Singh, however, added that BJP did not want to hurt people's feelings. Till now, the BJP has been running shy of articulating its position since the Supreme Court ruled that section 377 did not suffer from any constitutional infirmity.
On the other hand, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have come out against section 377, prompting reports that the UPA may even decide to promulgate an ordinance.
The two polar views held by the country's leading political parties – the BJP and Congress – might have serious repercussions on the final outcome of the issue as none would like to stand down while keeping in mind the interests of their core voter groups.
