CHANDIGARH: The Intelligence Bureau (IB) on Friday issued a high level alert to Punjab government seeking enhancement of seucrity for the visiting Pakistan Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif, a day after he suggested resumption of dialogue with India during his meeting with PM Manmohan Singh in Delhi.

"According to inputs conveyed by our agencies, Shahbaz Sharif, who is on a visit to (Indian) Punjab beginning December 14 faces a high level of threat from Pak based terrorists groups and its cohorts. It is recommended that the visiting Punjab CM be provided a DF (dignitaries/foreign guest scale security" the note said.

Sharif, the youger brother of Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif, had emphasized Pakistan's wish to establish friendly relations - that have been stalled for months after tit-for-tat killings of Indian and Pakistani soldiers along their common border - with India while meeting PM Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Thursday.

The IB note left the ruling Akali Dal government scrambling to arrange a VIP chopper and a security officer to escort Sharif to all three venues listed in his scheduled itinerary for Punjab.

Sharif, who has been invited by Indian Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to attend Kabbadi World Cup final here, is scheduled to visit three districts - Ludhiana, Amritsar and Muktsar.

He will also be visiting the family's native village Jatti Umra in Amritsar.

The note was written to Punjab home affairs department and the security wing of Punjab Police.

The IB has also mandated that Punjab Police must provide a chief security liasion officer (CLSO) along with Sharif in t he helicopter.

The security wing of Punjab Police and general administration department (GAD) of Punjab government were left locking horns over the new security mandate as the latter expressed unhappiness on the last-minute arrangement to reserve a seat for the CSLO in the chopper.

"Since the responsibility of securing the visiting dignitary is that of the state government as mentioned by you, it is again reiterated that seat be reserved by the CSLO on the helicopter. The allocation of seats, and the drawing up of the Passenger manifest, for different chippers, which have been hired by the state government is solely within the discretion of state government" a letter by ADGP (security, law and order) Dinkar Gupta said.
