Father of woman in 'snoopgate' controversy moves Supreme Court against probe - Hindustan Times

The father of the woman who was allegedly stalked on the orders of the Gujarat government, asked the Supreme Court to stop any investigation into the matter by the Centre.

He said a probe into what has made media headlines as 'snoopgate', would violate the privacy of his now married daughter.

The Supreme Court has sent notice to the Centre and Gujarat government, asking them to respond by Friday.

Earlier, Union law minister Kapil Sibal confirmed that the government has stopped looking for a judge to head an inquiry into whether Narendra Modi and his government in Gujarat had illegally spied upon the woman.

"I talked to the home minister in the morning. Nobody should feel that they are carrying out a political vendetta. If there has been a delay and then somebody feels that there is some vendetta, we do not want any such charge of vendetta against us. The allies have their own views." he said.

"That is why we did not move ahead. What was wrong in that. Let the next government carry it out," the Congress leader Kapil Sibal added while addressing reporters at an AICC briefing.

Two key allies - the NCP and the National Conference - had expressed their objection to the government's announcement that it would appoint a judge for the probe before the counting of votes for Lok Sabha elections on May 16.

The BJP had then said the commission will not stand legal scrutiny and a new government would review it.

The 'snoopgate' scandal erupted with the revelation of phone conversations secretly recorded in 2009 by GL Singhal, a former senior police officer in Gujarat.

The tapes allegedly establish that a "saheb" or big boss in Gujarat sought information on the movements and phone calls of the woman architect. The Congress had alleged that the "saheb" is Modi.
