Grand alliance big victory - Times of India

PATNA: The pre-poll RJD-JD(U)-Congress 'grand alliance' emerged victorious at the state assembly byelections winning six of the 10 seats which went to poll on August 21. The NaMo magic or the lack of it had the BJP satisfy with only four legislative assembly seats even though it had won six out of the 10 seats in 2010 assembly polls.

An average of 46.42% of voting was reported in the 10 assembly seats and a total of 94 candidates were fighting it out to make it to the law-making body of the state. The total number of voters in the ten constituencies was 26, 42, 407.

While the RJD won three seats - Rajnagar (SC), Chhapra and Mohiuddinnagar, the JD(U) won Jale and Parbatta while the Congress tasted victory from Bhagalpur. The BJP won four seats namely Hajipur, Narkatiaganj, Banka and Mohania (SC).

The combined Left forces - the CPI(ML)Liberation, CPI(M) and CPI, which contested all 10 seats, couldn't win any seat though it finishe d third in four constituencies where it polled about 38,000 votes.

It may be mentioned here that the RJD and JD(U) had field their candidates from four constituencies each while the Congress contested from two seats. The BJP had fielded its candidates from nine seats while the LJP contested one seat namely Parbatta.

The BJP winners where Rashmi Varma who defeated Congress's Fakhruddin Khan by a margin of 15,742 votes in Nakrkatiaganj, Awadhesh Singh defeated JD(U)'s Rajinder Roy by 6,127 votes in Hajipur, Ram Narayan Mandal defeated RJD's Iqbal Hussain Ansari by a mere 711 votes in Banka and Niranjan Ram from Mohania who defeated JD(U)'s Chandra Shekhar Paswan by 19,851 votes.

The results come as a breather to both Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar after their dismal performances in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. From Rajnagar (SC) constituency RJD's Ramawatar Paswan defeated BJP's Ramprit Paswan by 3,448 votes while RJD's Randhir Kumar Singh won Chhapr a defeating independent candidate Dr C N Gupta by 24,106 votes. The RJD also won the Mohiuddinnagar assembly seat where Ajay Kumar Bulganin, a former legislator, beat BJP's Rajesh Kumar Singh by 21,530 votes.

The two seats won by JD(U) are - Jale where Rishi Mishra defeated BJP's Ramniwas Prasad by 7,720 votes and Parbatta where Ramanand Prasad Singh trumped LJP's Suheli by 56,990 votes. Singh boasts of becoming an MLA by the maximum margin in the bypolls. The lone seat won by the Congress is Bhagalpur where its contestant Ajeet Sharma defeated BJP's Nabhay Kumar Choudhary by 17,229. The party has wrested the seat from the BJP. Former BJP health minister Ashwini Kumar Chaubey had won the seat for five consecutive term beginning 1995.

Bihar additional chief electoral officer R Lakshmanan told TOI the counting process concluded smoothly at all the places.
