Erm..when did we become Haryana? - Mumbai Mirror

Top police officials closed ranks behind a police subinspector who was thrashed by a group of MLAs in Vidhan Bhavan on Tuesday after he penalised Nalla Sopara legislator Kshitij Thakur for speeding in a car that had tinted glasses.

Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal and Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh led a delegation to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's office just hours after the shocking assault on API Sachin Suryawanshi and demanded strict action against the MLAs involved in the attack.

The cops told the chief minister that the unprovoked attack had angered the police force and if the MLAs went unpunished, a reaction would become difficult to contain.

In a clear signal that the cops were not going to take the assault lying down, the police did not seek the legislature's permission to lodge an offence against the MLAs and filed an FIR at the Marine Drive police station. Later in the evening, the case was transferred to the Crime Branch for investigations.

The FIR named Thakur, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Ram Kadam and fifteen others.

Kshitij Thakur, nephew of Virar strongman Bhai Thakur, was intercepted by PSI Suryawanshi at the southern end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Monday afternoon for speeding. While the speed limit on the Sea Link is 50 km/hr, Thakur car, according to Suryawanshi, was doing 110 km/hr. The MLA was also fined because the car's windows had tinted glasses.

The incident came a day after unidentified men shot at an assistant sub-inspector of the Haryana police when he asked them to stop their vehicle at a checkpoint on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Thakur lodged a complaint with the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council Vasant Davkhare, alleging Suryawanshi had misbehaved with him. Davkhare summoned Suraywanshi to his chamber the next day.

At the meeting in Davkhare's room on Tuesday, Suryawanshi was asked to apologise to Thakur. Suryawanshi, however, refused and insisted Davkhare take a look at the Sea Link's CCTV footage to see if he misbehaved.

When Suryawanshi emerged out of the meeting, Thakur and other MLAs began hitting him. When he tried to run away, he was chased and thrashed again till he was rescued by assembly marshals and taken to chief security officer Shivaji Bodkhe's room. Later, he taken St George Hospital and admitted to the casualty ward.

Later in the day, Thakur addressed a press conference and distributed CDs of what he described as an attack on him by Suryawanshi when he was stopped at Sea Link.

MNS MLA Ram Kadam, who too was allegedly involved in the attack, got no support from his party. His boss Raj Thackeray condemned the attack, while party spokesman Bala Nandgaonkar said the party will take appropriate action against him. "Rajsaheb is very unhappy about this attack on a policeman,'' Nandgaonkar told reporters.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan too condemned the attack and promised action against the MLAs. "I had a meeting with the MLAs and the police officers. The police officers are quite disturbed. No one has the right to take the law in his hands.''

Asked if it was appropriate on legislative council deputy chairman to summon a police officer without informing his superiors, the CM said he had no comment to offer.

Top police officers said Tuesday's attack should be seen in the background of the August 10 Azad Maidan riots when a rally called to condemn attacks on Muslims in Burma had turned violent and attacked policemen. "Even then the force got no support from the government," said an officer.
