NEW DELHI: The government said it was talking to political parties on a resolution concerning the Sri Lankan Tamil issue in Parliament, but the move was not linked to the withdrawal of support by the DMK to the UPA. Addressing the media, finance minister Chidambaram said the proposed resolution was not linked to the DMK's decision to withdraw support. He said the government was mullin g over the resolution, seeing the sentiments of the Tamils. The finance minister also dismissed allegations that India had sought dilution of the strongly-worded resolution by the US, saying it was an absolute "canard". "Tamil sentiments can be represented only through an appropriate resolution in Parliament," Chidambaram said. He claimed that the DMK was aware of the government's position on the issue but had "changed its mind" between the night of March 18 and morning of March 19. "We are not aware why DMK has changed their stance," Chidambaram said. Defending the government, Union parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath said that we are not lame duck government. The go vernment is neither lame nor is it a duck. We are absolutely stable. No political party has come out to challenge our majority, Kamal Nath said. Image of government has not got sullied because of an ally pulling out, an image is built on the work by the government, he added. "Doors and venues are open with everybody in a parliamentary democracy," the minister said. Information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said it was part of government's duty to highlight the feelings of the people of a state. "Talks are being held (on the resolution)," Tiwari said.
