TRICHY: Thanjavur police are searching for five accused, including a scribe, in connection with the attack on a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, on Saturday, in Thanjavur. The police have already arrested three persons and remanded them to Trichy jail in this case. The monk was roughed up by the members of a Tamil outfit at the Brihadeeswarar temple, while he was visiting the historic shrine, along with an 18-member group from Delhi University, as part of their archaeological research. After the attack, the mon k and other members of the party were rescued by the police and were sent to Chennai through Trichy airport on Saturday evening itself. Though, the police held seven persons of Tamil Desiya Podhuvudamai Katchi (TDPK) and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) in this case, they arrested only three and let off the rest after ascertaining that they were innocent. "We secured seven persons but later found that four of them were not involved in this case. The arrested persons were Rasu Muniyandi, Pazha Rajendran (of TDPK) and Thiyagu of Naam Tamilar (of NTK). The accused were remanded in Trichy jail." "We are on the look out for five accused in connection with this case, including a local scribe who is said to be the son of Rasu Muniyandi, who first informed others about the presence of the monk. ," said T S Anbu, the superintendent of police, Thanjavur, on Sunday. "Of the five wanted accused, two were identified as Vijay, a local reporter , and advocate Karikalan. However, the three accused were not identified," said a special branch inspector, Thanjavur. Meanwhile, president of the TDPK, P Maniarasan, said that his party would continue to attack any non-Tamil coming from Sri Lanka to Thanjavur. Meanwhile, an academician has criticised students for joining protests against the island nation. Dr R Khader Mohideen, the principal of Jamal Mohammed College, Trichy, told ToI "It is not appreciable that the students are involving themselves in protests at the cost of their studies. When the examinations are around the corner, such protests will have a negative impact on their academic performances. Our college students are matured enough to understand that the protests against Sri Lanka would pave way to China to extend their support to the island nation." As the protest was raging across the state, the state government had declared indefinite holiday for all the colleges. But academicians feel that it disturbed the academic calen dar. "The students' protest followed by the indefinite holiday collapsed our academic calendar. So, the entire schedule will have to be changed. The students should raise their voice in support of Sri Lankan Tamils through other modes of protests like sending letters to the government," Dr K Anbarasu, Principal of National College, Trichy, said. It is also feared the tourism sector may be affected due to the violence against Sri Lankans. V Vasudevan, former president of Trichy Travel Federation, said, "The number of tourists from Sri Lanka to Velankanni church has been dwindling since last year following the protests over the Lankan Tamil issue. The protest should not turn violent as it would create an image that our region is not safe for tourists from anywhere." Meanwhile, Thanjavur SP said that every effort would be taken to protect the tourists, and the police had beefed up permanent security at important places of worship around Thanjavur. The SP said the fo rce was planning to put up an outpost at Poondi Matha Church, a basilica in the region. via Top Stories - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNFwt9_tnJCSkWTzcjFFbTGsncInqw&url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Police-on-look-out-for-accused-in-monk-attack-case/articleshow/19028337.cms | |||
