Child rape: Probe denies hush-up by cops - Times of India

NEW DELHI: The vigilance inquiry report on alleged lapses of the Gandhi Nagar police probing the rape of a five-year-old girl denies any hush-up by police station officers. But the report, submitted to Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar on Saturday, blames the station house officer (SHO) for offering the family Rs 2,000 and says "his response to the incident was weak". "The vigilance report states that Dharampal, the SHO, had reacted in an irresponsible manner. He could have shown interest in handling the case. But there was no scope of any hush-up because a case was already registered, and there was media, NGO and government agencies all around," said a top Delhi Police officer. "The SHO couldn't have offered the money for not registering the FIR because it was already registered," added the officer. The girl's family had alleged that cops offered them Rs 2,000 to hush up the case and made insensitive remarks when they went to police with a missing complaint. The top brass of Delhi Police has now initiated a regular vigilance inquiry against Dharampal, which will be over in a month. If found guilty, the SHO could be directly dismissed or suspended. The police commissioner himself is monitoring every development in the case. Two persons, Manoj and Pradeep, have been arrested for brutally raping the five-year- old girl on April 15 in the east Delhi locality. The girl was rescued 40 hours later on April 17 and is recuperating at AIIMS. Manoj has told cops that on April 15, he and his friend Pradeep had consumed alcohol at his house and Pradeep insisted on bringing a girl.
