Nandlal Sonawane, 25, a commando with Force One, Maharashtra's elite counter-terrorism unit, committed suicide by shooting himself with a Glock pistol on the left side of his chest on the terrace of a building in the Kalina police campus at 5am on Friday. He was scheduled to get married on May 12.

"On hearing the sound of the weapon going off, other Force One commandos went to the terrace and found Sonawane in a pool of blood with the pistol in his hand," said RG Pardeshi, senior police inspector of the Vakola police station.

Though Sonawane did not leave a suicide note, there was a message in the draft folder of his mobile phone. "He left a message in Marathi, wishing his family, relatives and friends, and named more than 20 people. He asked his sister to take care of his parents and wrote shubechha (best wishes)," an official said. Sonawane further wrote: "I know what I'm going to do is not correct," in Marathi and added in English: "Good Bye".

Sonawane was recently picked as the best among 500 commandos from across India, who participated in a series of endurance tests. Rakesh Maria, additional director general of police of the ATS, said the motive appears to be personal. "He apologised to his family and to the girl he was supposed to marry."

'Pride of Force One' sent fiancée unhappy SMS
Described by his superior as the 'Pride of Force One', commando Nandlal Sonawane, who shot himself fatally at the Kalina training campus around 5am on Friday, had reportedly spoken to his fiancée the previous afternoon, said investigators. While the conversation lasted over 20 minutes, the last message he sent from his Samsung cellphone was also to his fiancée whom he was to marry on May 12.

While no official was able to confirm what had led Sonawane to take his own life, sources said it appeared from the message that he was not completely happy about the impending wedding.

The message he sent to his fiancée read: "Tu majhashi khota bollees (You lied to me.)."

The message said not only she but her mother too had misled him. Soon after, he called her at 3.30pm.

Sometime after the conversation, he apparently drafted four text messages to friends and family members, seeking forgiveness and bidding goodbye. One of these is addressed to his parents, in which he apologised for the step he was preparing to take. Another message was to his sister, advising her to look after their parents. A third message was addressed to almost 20 friends and cousins whom he named individually.

The fourth message was to his Force One colleagues. The messages were not sent and were found in the drafts folder.

Superintendent of police DT Shinde said, "It is very sure that his drastic step is not related to any Force One issue. He was the top commando of the force..."
