AHMEDABAD: The Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) on Thursday claimed that the author behind larger conspiracy theory is social activist Teesta Setalvad. In the same breath, SIT counsel R S Jamwar defended chief minister Narendra Modi, who is accused of not only having failed to control the 2002 riots, but of abetting it as per Zakia Jafri's complaint. Responding to Zakia's protest petition against SIT's clean chit to Modi and others, the SIT cited Zakia's testimony before the court, in which she said that she did whatever Setalvad and former top cop R B Sreekumar asked her to do. Dubbing the complaint against the CM and other government functionaries, the lawyer alleged, "Setalvad is the novel writer and others like Sreekumar, Sanjiv Bhatt and Rahul Sharma have added to it." The SIT also cited evidence to claim that the conclusions of the former SC-judge headed Citizens' Tribunal, which was organized by Setalvad's NGO, were nothing but falsities. "Haren Pandya's claims were negated by Sanjiv Bhatt's statement that there was no other politician present in the meeting at the CM's residence on February 27, 2002. The tribunal did not even record Pandya's statement. How can this be treated as evidence," advocate Jamwar argued about veracity of the report. In its all out defence of Modi, the SIT claimed that he must not be blamed for not acting upon intelligence. "The DGP got intelligence about karsevaks' return from Ayodhya a day after the Godhra incident occurred. If this was the case, prosecute intelligence officers - G C Raiger and Sanjiv Bhatt, why should Modi's prosecution be demanded?" the lawyer posed a question. The prob e agency also defended Modi for his proven false statement that burning of S-6 of Sabarmati Express was an ISI act. "After any such incident, politicians normally claim that ISI must be behind it. The chief minister, who was busy with budget session in the assembly, flew to Vadodara and then Godhra in a hurry. He did not have time enough to gather information. And when the incident had taken place 10 years after Babri Masjid demolition, what is wrong if he had said so?" the SIT submitted. The SIT also blamed Setalvad for going after Modi, whereas in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, nobody pursued the matter "in this fashion". via Top Stories - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNFh7YrbbdUn_nuxyllZhV19DfoF_g&url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Gujarat-riots-SIT-defends-Narendra-Modis-actions-statement/articleshow/19732819.cms | |||
