Aam Aadmi Party to support BJP? Arvind Kejriwal says no, Prashant Bhushan says maybe

AAP's Prashant Bhushan says party can extend issue-based support to BJP in Delhi

New DelhiArvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which emerged the star of last week's Delhi election, appears to be divided over its first major political decision.

Mr Kejriwal had ruled out giving or taking support to form a government in Delhi, where no party has won a clear majority, but his colleague Prashant Bhushan has caused a stir by saying that the party may consider supporting the BJP.

"If the BJP gives us in writing that it will pass the Jan Lokpal Bill by December 29 and set up Jan Sabhas (or public assemblies) in Delhi as promised by the AAP, we may consider supporting the party," Mr Bhushan told NDTV on Tuesday, clarifying that this was his own view.

After the year-old AAP shook up Delhi's political landscape by finishing a close second and trouncing the incumbent Congress, there is no clarity over who will form the government. The BJP is the largest party but it needs five more seats for a majority to form a government.

Both the BJP and AAP have refused to stake claim, and say they would rather sit in opposition without a clear mandate, which poses a curious dilemma for Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.

Mr Kejriwal says the AAP, which has 28 seats, will serve as "a responsible opposition", but if the BJP cannot manage the numbers it needs, his party is prepared to fight another election. He has accused the BJP of trying to poach some of his newly-elected legislators, which the BJP has refuted.

The AAP, which promised Delhi an alternative to what it describes as the two deeply corrupt and self-serving parties, believes that aligning with either would be betrayal.

Reading the mood of the public, the BJP says it will not indulge in horse-trading and try to win over AAP legislators.

An option for the Lieutenant Governor is to have President's Rule and hold another election in Delhi along with the national election, due by May.
