The nation is horrified with a new low in Parliament on Thursday but for a region still agitated over the Congress party's decision over six months back to split Andhra Pradesh, the unthinkable protest of the two Seemandhra MPs came as "a heroic act at the climax."
Seemandhra, which was shutdown on Thursday to protest the Telangana bill's introduction, was actually expecting such action in the lower house.
Lagadapati Rajagopal is a Congress MP from Vijayawada and Modugula Venugopala Reddy is a TDP MP from Narasaraopet – both in Coastal Andhra. But the two especially Lagadapati are finding vast support in the two regions and 13 districts of Seemandhra.
Further, united AP activists who almost lost hopes on the state's unity are now hailing Lagadapati as the Samaikhyandhra hero and are willing to credit him in the event of stalling of the state's division.
"His actions are being criticized but such a sensation was needed to jolt our Parliament out of its slumber over Seemandhra's anguish," says Giri Srikanth (31), a local journalist in Kurnool in Rayalaseema, reflecting the views of most of his town's people. "He's seen as a hero now."
Not willing to perceive the MP's act as disrespect to a democratic institution, people are in-fact sympathising with them for being forced to do so by the UPA government and for "the attack on launched by other Congress MPs on them in the well."
"Is it not Lagadapati's own party that forced him to this level with its unflinching movement on Telangana?" questions Veerapaneni Kruschev (55), an advertising professional in Vijayawada terming the manner of bifurcation as highly objectionable. Rajagopal was expelled from the party, a few days back.
And the MPs themselves claim to have acted on behalf of the aspirations of their constituents. "Whatever I did is according to my conscience that is a reflection of the concerns of my people," said Modugula in New Delhi.
CM Kiran Reddy, who championed the Samaikhyandhra cause to the extent of state assembly rejecting the bill, has reportedly criticized the suspension of the Seemandhra MPs from the house.
