LIVE: Arvind Kejriwal goes down fighting, resigns over jan lokpal bill - Hindustan Times

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned on Friday after failing to table the jan lokpal bill, which was defeated in the introduction stage itself.

Kejriwal announced his decision around 8.15pm, ending his Aam Aadmi Party government’s 49-day run in power. After a tumultuous day in the assembly, Kejriwal told supporters that the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party had

“colluded” against the bill meant to fight corruption after his government ordered filing of an FIR against Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani.

He had made the same charge in the House as well.

In connection with the FIR on revision of gas prices by the Centre, RIL trashed “irresponsible allegations” and said it would resort to legal remedies “to protect our reputation and preserve the pioneering efforts and investment made by Reliance so far”.

On February 9, Kejriwal had threatened “to go to any extent” for the bill meant to fight corruption even if it meant resigning.

Earlier, in the assembly, Kejirwal had hinted at resignation, saying, “This appears to be our last session.”

Finding it difficult to make himself heard above the protests from the opposition BJP, he had said, “If I have to put my CM chair in jeopardy to fight corruption, I will… a thousand times. If required, I will give my life for the nation.”

AAP minister Manish Sisodia had announced introduction of the bill, but the opposition termed it unconstitutional.

Both the BJP and the Congress were demanding a discussion on Lt Governor Najeeb Jung's appeal to the government not to table the bill in the house without his approval.

When the House reconvened after an adjournment, the bill was defeated in introduction stage itself with 42 members voting against it and 27 in favour in the 70-member House.

The AAP, which had won 28 seats in Delhi in a stunning debut, had formed the government after accepting outside support from the Congress. Kejriwal’s government had been sworn in on December 28 last year.

Barely 17 months old, the AAP has decided to contest at least 350 Lok Sabha seats when elections are held this summer.
