A day after yoga guru Baba Ramdev's 'honeymoon' remark on Rahul Gandhi and Dalits, Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday registered an FIR against the yoga guru for violating poll code while BSP chief Mayawati threatened a nationwide agitation if Ramdev was not booked under the stringent SC/ST Act and put behind bars.
On Saturday, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes also swung into action, asking the Uttar Pradesh director-general of police DGP to inform the panel what action the department police had taken or planned to take against Ramdev, sources in the commission told TOI. Officials said the panel was waiting for the DGP's reply and, if required, would direct the police to slap the SC/ST Act on Ramdev.
Caught in a legal bind and faced with flak, from all around, Ramdev was quick to expressed regret. "Had there been concern for Dalits, their situation would have been different today. The comment was in the sense of an idiom. There was no intent to insult Rahul or Dalits," he said at a yoga convention in Vadodara. Ramdev said. He said all he meant to say was that Rahul Gandhi was serving his own purpose through his acts. At a press conference in Lucknow on Friday, Ramdev had said Rahul "goes to the houses of Dalits for honeymoon and picnic".
