Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) first-time MPs to abide by parliamentary procedures and ethics, focus on their work and take care of their constituencies.

Addressing the party's new parliamentarians at an orientation camp in Surajkund, Haryana, Modi asked them to focus on 'aachar (conduct)', 'vichaar (thinking)' and 'vyavhar (behaviour)', TV channels reported.

"Change the mindset of being in the Opposition. Now, you are representatives of the government," an NDTV tweet quoted Modi, who himself is a first-time MP, as saying.

"Take the work of the government to the people, don't speak out of turn in the media," another tweet quoted him as saying.

The BJP, which won 282 of the 543 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, has 161 new parliamentarians in the Lower House. The two-day orientation programme has been organised to make them aware of parliamentary procedures and groom them on how to perform better as MPs.

Modi asked them to chart a blueprint for development in their respective constituencies and share it with the government. He also told the MPs to prepare a roadmap for their work for the next six months.

The two-day orientation camp commenced on Saturday, with Modi and Union home minister Rajnath Singh addressing the gathering.

The orientation will cover several issues including how to use social media effectively and how to use the MPLAD funds.

The workshop is being attended by senior leaders such as Sushma Swaraj, LK Advani, Piyush Goyal and M Venkaiah Naidu.

The meet will conclude on Sunday, with Advani delivering the valedictory address.
