NEW DELHI: Terming Italy's decision against sending back two marines accused of killing two fishermen off the Kollam coast last year as a "diplomatic tragedy," Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy on said it was the Centre's responsibility that the accused stood trial in India. Talking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, Chandy said it was not just Kerala's issue, but a question of the country's prestige and sovereignty. Saying that there won't be any compromise on th e issue, the chief minister said Italy had used diplomacy as a "weapon to cheat" another nation's apex court and "shield" the killers. "No nation can agree with it. The world will stand by India on this issue. That is why I am telling that Italy's stand on this issue is a diplomatic tragedy," he added. Chandy said the Prime Minister has assured to do everything possible for bringing the Italian marines back. He discussed the matter with Congress president Sonia Gandhi also. To a question whether the Supreme Court had "erred" in allowing them to go to Italy, he said: "I am not going to find any fault. What next, is the specific agenda." He also expressed hope that It aly would come around and obey Indian laws. The two marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, the security detail on board the Italian-flagged vessel Enrica Lexie, mistook a fishing boat for dhow carrying pirates, and shot down two fishermen on February 15, 2012. The Supreme Court had, on February 22 this year, permitted the marines to visit Italy to cast their votes in the elections.
