SrinagarCurfew has been declared in Srinagar to prevent street clashes after the death of a 22-year-old protester in alleged firing by paramilitary forces yesterday.

Police said Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel had allegedly fired at protesters throwing stones at their vehicles in Zoonimar area, killing Altaf Ahmed Wani. The ruling National Conference said Wani was their party activist.

The incident came on the same day when terrorists attacked a CRPF camp in Srinagar, killing five jawans. Eight jawans and four civilians were injured.

Union Home Secretary RK Singh said the two terrorists killed were Pakistanis and another two may have escaped after the attack.

The Kashmir-based Hizbul Mujahideen group said it was behind the killings, a claim intelligence officials aren't buying, sources said.

Kashmir has been tense since the execution in February of Afzal Guru, who belonged to Sopore near Srinagar, for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament in which 13 people were killed. He was hanged and buried at Tihar Jail, triggering protests in his home state. The government has refused to return his body to his family.
