Final decision on Telangana likely by August 5; Andhra Pradesh CM unhappy - Zee News

Zee Media Bureau New Delhi: The suspense over statehood to Telangana region is likely to be over before the Monsoon Session of the Parliament beginning August 05. The process of consultations over the Telangana issue are now over, and the Congress' top leadership seems to be in favour of creating a separate state. "The consultation process is over. Now you should await the decision of the party and the UPA government," was all Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh had told waiting reporters after the Congress core group meeting on Friday evening. The final call on the issue, festering for the past many years, will now be taken by the party's highest decision making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC). Albeit the date for the CWC meeting is yet to be decided, it is believed that it will be held before the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on August 05. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy continues to oppose the demand of a separate Telangana. According to a report, Reddy had told Congress president Sonia Gandhi, just before the core group meeting at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's official residence at 7, Race Course Road, that "creating Telangana would be a suicidal step and it would be difficult to preside over any move to bifurcate the state". Earlier on Friday, Congress leaders from Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and Andhra regions) had called on the Chief Minister and urged him to convey to the leadership their strong opposition to the state's division, party sources said. Hectic activity in Delhi began amid the continuing resignations of Seemandhra leaders to mount pressure on the central government. Digvijay Singh, who is in charge of party affairs in the state, said in the afternoon that the process of consultation is over and the time has come for a decision. He was talking to reporters after holding separate meetings with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and state Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana. Digvijay Singh's predecessor Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had dealt with party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, was also present at the meetings. The two central leaders held detailed discussions with the three state leaders who rushed to the national capital on summons from the party central leadership. Andhra Pradesh, which has 42 Lok Sabha seats, consists of three regions - Telangana, coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.
