Curfew continues in eight Jammu districts; life back to normal in Srinagar - Times of India

JAMMU/SRINAGAR: Indefinite curfew continued on Monday in eight districts of Jammu region, as the authorities said except for some minor incidents, the overall situation remained peaceful throughout the region.

Curfew continued for the fourth day without any relaxation in Kishtwar town, where communal clashes erupted on Friday, resulting in the death of two people and destruction of public and private property.

"Curfew shall continue without any relaxation today (Monday) in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Doda and Kistwar districts. No curfew has been imposed in Poonch and Ramban districts," a senior administrative officer said.

He said the situation was being reviewed regularly and any decision on relaxation of curfew would be based on improvement of situation, where it has been imposed as a precautionary measure.

Loudspeaker-mounted security vehicles on Monday morning made the announcements in the curfew-bound areas, advising people to remain indoors, as no relaxation has been given under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The Army carried out flag marches on Monday morning in the curfew-bound areas to instill confidence among people.

Miscreants torched a vehicle in Domana area of Jammu city on Sunday, where slogan-shouting protesters also burnt tyres at some places.

A peace march was carried out by members of both the communities in Poonch town on Sunday to assert centuries-old communal harmony of Jammu and Kashmir.

Authorities have ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Jammu on Monday, as the Board of School Education also postponed the Class 11 exams scheduled for the day.

The annual Amarnath yatra remained suspended for the second day on Monday as no pilgrim was allowed t o proceed to the valley.

Life back to normal in Srinagar

Life was normal on Monday in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, as educational institutions, markets, government offices and transport opened after three days of Eid festivities and a shutdown called by separatists.

Markets opened early as people rushed to work after three days of festivities, and the shutdown called against communal clashes in Kishtwar town.

Schools, colleges, banks, government offices opened as cheerful children boarded school-buses to rejoin their classmates after the Eid holidays.

Both private and public transport moved on all the city and inter-district roads in the valley.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik called for a march against village defence committees of Jammu region.

In a statement, Malik said the committees were "armies without uniform".

Many separatists have been blaming the village committees for their role in the communal clashes in Kishtwar.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah said on Sunday that the committees were formed to combat militant threats and any administrative decision on them would be taken only after keeping everything under consideration.
