Kashmir shuts over Jammu clashes, internet services stopped - Hindustan Times

Fearing an effect of Jammu region's violence in Kashmir Valley, the authorities on Sunday undertook several extraordinary security measures, including stopping internet services, even as separatists' shutdown affected normal life for the second day. "Rumour mongering always fuels the situation," Kashmir region's inspector general of police Abdul Ghani Mir told the Hindustan Times. He refused to comment on how long the internet services will remain unoperational in the Valley. Internet services were withdrawn from across the Valley on Sunday night after reports and rumours of communal clashes spreading from Kishtwar to other districts of Jammu region like Jammu city and Rajouri. For second consecutive day, normal business remained suspended in the Valley. Shops, business establishments and petrol pumps were closed and public transport was badly hit by the shutdown call issued by hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani. However, private traffic plied normally. "We are monitoring the situation closely. We are in touch with the respected personalities in the region and are collecting the details and would apprise people here," said Geelani, who is likely to issue fresh protest programme in Srinagar on Monday. Jammu region's Kishtwar area is tense since clashes erupted between two groups after Eid prayers on Friday. The authorities are maintaining a strict vigil at sensitive pockets in the Valley to stop any spill over. "We are on a high alert to meet the situation," said IGP Mir, while refusing to comment on fresh deployments being made in 10 districts of the Valley. More personnel have been rushed to the area known for stone pelting and clashes. An eerie claim prevailed in Srinagar on Sunday but there were no reports of clashes from any part of the Valley. However, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for traffic in the wake of fresh clashes in Jammu. The authorities for the second day did not allow the Amarnath pilgrims to go ahead for the pilgrimage and all pilgrims have been halted in Jammu. "No vehicle movement was allowed either way from Srinagar or Jammu," said a traffic police official.
