Kishtwar violence: Omar asks people not to fall play into politics - IBNLive

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister on Sunday appealed to people of the state to dismiss rumours and cooperate with the administration in order to bring the current situation under control. He also asked people not to fall play into politics and justice will be done.

His remarks came in the wake of the recent clashes in Kishtwar and in various regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Curfew has also been imposed as authorities braced to contain spread the fallout of violence in Kishtwar district.

The Chief Minister said clashes still ocurred at places around Kishtwar and there were two casaulities. He added, "Our main aim was to maintain calm in Kishtwar and surrounding areas. We will do everything that is necessary to maintain peace in Kishtwar. Swift action will follow and people responsible for the death will be brought to book with strict punishment."

Clarifying his action on bringing in army, he said it was brought in to maintain peace in Rajouri and parts of Jammu city. "Seeing that police and paramilitary were outnumbered, army had been called in to flag marched," he said.

The bandh had political repercussions as well with BJP leaders and Opposition leaders were being stopped from going to Kishtwar. Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley was detained at the Jammu Airport and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti was also stopped from visiting Kishtwar in view of the escalating violence. "In a telephonic conversation with the leader of Opposition, I asked her to tell their people in the region to maintain calm and not to flare up the issue,' he said.

The escalating violence has also led to the suspension of Amarnath Yatra. Normal life in the state has also hit as the bandh was being observed against Friday's communal clashes in Kishtwar district.

Protests were held in Jammu and adjoining districts of region which observed bandh in protest against the communal clashes in Kishtwar district. Communal tension ran high in Rajouri district and curfew was imposed as a precautionary measure, SSP, Rajouri, Mubassir Lattifee said. Kishtwar district on Saturday had witnessed stray incidents of stone-pelting even as army personnel patrolled the streets of as the local administration advised people to remain indoors and not to violate prohibitory orders.

Clashes were reported in Gulabgarh area of Paddar in the same district where people indulged in arson. Some shops were also burnt. Three persons were injured in firing during the clashes. State Police Chief Ashok Prasad was camping in the district since Saturday to take on-the-spot decisions besides ensuring coordination between the civil and army authorities, a senior official said.

A large number of BJP, Bajrang Dal and VHP activists had on Sunday marched in the Jammu city to protest against Kishtwar violence and later clashed with police and CRPF personnel as they stopped them from moving ahead. There was stone-pelting and clashes with police, which resorted to canecharge and teargas shelling. Seven people were injured in the incident. They included four police and CRPF men. The city SP also sustained injuries, police said.
