Seven residents of a 26-storey Mumbai skyscraper were killed and seven, including six firemen, injured in a major fire which broke out on the 13th floor of the building Friday evening, officials said on Saturday.
Among the victims are a woman and six men, whose bodies were charred beyond recognition, and were recovered from the lift, lobby, staircase and other areas on the 12th, 16th and 26th floor of the Mont Blanc building in the posh Kemps Corner area of south Mumbai, an official of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Control Cell said.
"We have not been able to identify any of the victims and shall be conducting DNA tests to ascertain their identity," the official said.
Fire broke out on the 12th floor of the 26-storey Mont Blanc building yesterday evening. Five firefighters, including two officers, were injured while carrying out rescue operations.
The Mont Blanc building, in which the fire broke out, is located near August Kranti Maidan, Kemps Corner.
According to fire control room, the fire broke out at around 7.33 pm.
"We have deployed around 25 vehicles on spot," said an official from control room last night.
"There were some cylinders, which apparently exploded, injuring six firemen including two officers," sources said.
The fire is believed to be of Grade 2 intensity. Emergency calls were received at 7.50 pm.
Four firemen and two fire officers hurt during rescue attempt at Mont Blanc, Kemps Corner. The injured firemen have been rushed to Jaslok and Breach Candy hospitals.
A fire brigade official termed it as a "major" fire.
Fourteen fire engines, seven water tankers and four ambulances were rushed to the spot.
Civic body sources said six fire-fighters sustained injuries during the operation to control the flames.
"People who reside above the 12th floor are trapped in their apartments. They cannot come down as the smoke had engulfed the entire floor," said Viraz, a resident.
Another resident said that due to multiple cylinder bursts in the apartments, the fire spread across the entire floor.
One of the injured was rushed to the Nair Hospital, while the other five were taken to the Burns Hospital at Airoli in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, they said.
Asked to comment on reports that six people were killed in the fire, they said: "So far we only have reports of six injured in the fire."
None of the residents of the building were reported to have suffered injuries.
Some residents also told reporters that the building was equipped with fire-fighting apparatus.
