Odisha is bracing up for the maiden visit of Pranab Mukherjee in his capacity as the President. The State Government will roll out red carpet for Pranab, who would arrive on a two-day visit to the State on Wednesday. The President is scheduled to deliver the 45th convocation address of Utkal University and visit the 12th century Jagannath temple at Puri. The President would reach the Biju Patnaik airport at 7.35 pm on Wednesday and proceed to the Raj Bhavan, where a State banquet would be hosted by Governor S C Jamir. On Thursday, he will grace the Utkal University convocation at 11 am along with Governor and Chancellor of Universities Jamir and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. "The President will give away the Honoris Causa to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, former chairperson of State Human Rights Commission Justice R K Patra and neurologist Dr Sanatan Rath, besides addressing the convocation during his stay in the university till 12.15 pm," said P K Mishra, Chairman of the PG Council, Utkal University. The Commissionerate of Police has taken steps to ensure tight security in the Capital City as well as Utkal University. A security rehearsal was conducted on Tuesday. DCP Nitinjeet Singh said the security cover for the President is as per the Blue Book. "A total of 42 platoons of police force would be deployed during the President's visit while four DCPs, as many additional DCPs, 17 ACPs, 179 SIs and ASIs, 97 traffic constables and 60 lady constables will be in charge of the security arrangements," said Singh, adding that traffic disruptions in areas through which President's entourage will pass would not exceed 10 minutes. After attending the convocation, Pranab would fly to Puri by helicopter to visit the 12th century Jagannath temple. From the Puri helipad, he would reach the temple at 1.10 pm and will be received by Puri Gajapati King Divyasingh Dev, Revenue Divisional Commissioner (central range) and chief administrator of Jagannath temple Arvind Padhee, IG of Police Arun Roy and senior members of Jagannath Temple Managing Committee. "During his 30-minute stay in the temple, it will remain out of bounds for the normal visitors due to security reasons. Since it's a full moon day, certain rituals have to be completed within a stipulated time and servitors of the temple have assured us to do so," said Padhee. He added that the temple periphery has been spruced up in the wake of the President's visit. At the temple, Pranab will be presented a Patta Chitra on Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath by the temple chief administrator Padhee. He would leave temple for Raj Bhavan at Puri at 1.45 pm where he would have his lunch and take rest. Puri SP Anup Sahoo said elaborate security arrangements have been put in place.
