Says she's facing cases for amassing wealth disproportionate to known income

Chennai : In a harsh criticism of the Left parties for seeking to back his arch rival and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha's purported Prime Ministerial ambitions, DMK leader M Karunanidhi on Friday accused the Left leaders of resorting to opportunistic slavery. "She is facing a case for amassing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income. Backing her for Prime Minister's post now is nothing but opportunistic slavery," the elderly politician said in response to questions from journalists at Tiruchy in central Tamil Nadu, where the DMK will conduct its 10th State conference over the weekend.

Recently, senior CPI leader A B Bardhan had while striking an alliance with the AIADMK subtly endorsed Jayalalitha for Prime Minister saying a post-poll scenario could open up opportunities for her. Jayalalitha, whose party cadres are going to town projecting her as the future Prime Minister of India, however, sought to deflect the attention to the topic saying such things could be decided later.

Karunanidhi, who is heading an alliance comprising smaller parties representing the Dalits and Muslims, said he was hopeful that the results of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls would be a forerunner to a change of government in Tamil Nadu in 2016 as well.

Karunanidhi denied any such possibility of a grand alliance saying the DMK could join hands only with forces which respected the feelings, sentiments and unity of the Tamils.

"Respecting others, which was the main policy of the DMK founder Annadurai, would be the basis for any alliance involving our party in the Lok Sabha elections," he said, adding that this rule would apply to possible tie-up with the DMDK as well.

Asked about his daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday, he claimed it was a courtesy call.
