'Ab ki baar ...' customized for Gujarat - Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Narendra Modi may have got the nation chanting 'Ab ki baar, Modi sarkar' — the BJP slogan for change. But back home in Gujarat, which has seen Modi's sarkar since 2001, the slogan doesn't seem to cut much ice with voters. Changing track from the national tune, Modi, who has harped on Gujarati asmita (pride) for years, has come up with a special spin for Gujarat — 'Vote Tamaro, Vat Gujarat No' (Your vote, Gujarat's pride).

In the last leg of campaigning before Gujarat votes on April 30, the home ground is agog with the prospect of a Gujarati becoming the PM. 'Aapna Narendrabhai, Aapna PM' (Our Narendra, Our PM), scream hoardings in Ahmedabad. "For Gujarat, we're focusing on linking Gujarati pride with a Gujarati becoming the PM," explains Bharat Pandya, state BJP general secretary.

For Gujaratis known for their business acumen, the incentives of a Gujarati becoming the PM are being extolled by Modi himself. "Once our government is formed in Delhi, panchey aangaliyo ghee maa, leela laher (extremely favourable situation). Mosaal maa bhojan hoy, maa pirasnaar hoy (There would be a feast in maternal grandparents' house and mother would serve food). I don't need to explain more," he says to the cheering crowds.

Modi has also got the airwaves resounding with how a Gujarati will now restore justice to the state which, he claims, has been meted step-motherly treatment by Congress at the Centre. A Gujarati will do justice to Gujarat, say advertisements played out on radio stations.
